DR. DIONYSIA-THEODORA AVGERINOPOULOU
Dr. Dionysia-Theodora Avgerinopoulou is a leading future in International Environmental Law and Policy. A former Member of the Hellenic Parliament, she serves as the Vice-Chair of the Steering Committee of the Global Water Partnership Organization and the Head of Water of the Energy and Environment Committee of the International Chamber of Commerce. She is by profession a specialized attorney in Public International Law, European Law, Environmental, Climate Change and Sustainable Development Law and ADR and the Executive Director of the European Institute of Law, Science and Technology. Dr. Avgerinopoulou has also served as the Chairperson of the Circle of the Mediterranean Parliamentarians on Sustainable Development and the Vice-Chair for the Mediterranean Commission for Sustainable Development. She was nominated as the candidate for the position of the Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Program at the rank of the Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations by the Hellenic Republic.
Dionysia received a first degree in Law from the Faculty of Law of the National and Kapodestrian University of Athens, Greece (top 1 in class, grade: excellent) and an LL.M. in International Legal Studies from the Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, D.C. with distinction. She also holds a Doctorate in International Environmental Law (J.S.D.) from the Columbia University School of Law. She has been the recipient of many awards and scholarships. Dionysia is the author of several articles on environmental and international issues and has presented her work on several international conferences. International media have covered aspects of her work in many countries.
She has previously worked, among others, on environmental cases at the Legal Service of the European Commission in Brussels, Belgium, the Permanent Mission of the European Union at the United Nations in New York, U.S.A., the Center on Environmental and Land Use Law of the New York University School of Law in New York, the Yale Center for Environmental Law and Policy and the Yale Law School in New Haven, C.T., U.S.A. and the International and Foreign Law Institute in Athens, Greece. She is an attorney-at-law by profession. She teaches Public International Law, International Environmental Law, European Environmental Law, Law of Sustainable Development and Energy Law.
She served twice as a Member of the Hellenic Parliament, as well as the Chairperson of the Special Permanent Parliamentary Committee on Environmental Protection and its Subcommittee of the Watercourses, as well as a Member and Chair of the National Defense and Foreign Affairs Committee, and as a Member of the Committee on the Revision of the Greek Constitution and the Committee on the Parliament’s Library. She has been the Secretary of the Parliamentary Committee of Friendship between Greece and the Netherlands and Member of the Parliamentary Committees of Friendship between Greece and the U.S.A., Russia, Kenya and Israel. She has also served as the President of the Parliamentary Committee of Friendship between Greece and Botswana, and a member of the Parliamentary Committees of Friendship between Greece and the U.S.A., Russia, Israel, and Albania. She has served as the Deputy Secretary of Volunteerism and NGOs of the New Democracy Party (“Nea Democratia”), and the Deputy Head of the Environmental Policy Sector of the New Democracy Party. Dr. Avgerinopoulou was a member of the Committee regarding the Genetically Modified Organisms of the Greek Ministry for Environment, Energy and Climate Change. Most notably, she was the Chairperson of the Standing Committee for the UN Affairs of the Inter-Parliamentary Union.
In 2015, Dr. Avgerinopoulou was nominated for the position of the Executive Director of UNEP at the rank of the Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations by the Hellenic Republic. In 2013, Dr. Avgerinopoulou was nominated for the position of the Deputy Executive Secretary of UNEP by the Hellenic Republic. In 2011, Dr. Avgerinopoulou was elected as a Young Global Leader of the World Economic Forum for her leadership in environmental protection. In 2011, she received the “Green Star” Award by UNEP/OCHA/Green Cross International for her efforts in preparing and combating environmental emergencies. She was also selected among the “40Under40” of the EU, namely among the most promising 40 leaders of the European Union under the age of 40. In 2010, she also received a Special Congressional Recognition for her “outstanding efforts and invaluable contributions on behalf of Hellenic Students and the environment” and the Global Citizenship Award for Leadership in Assisting Humanity by Orphans International Worldwide in 2010. In 2009, she received the international Goddess Artemis Award by the Euro-American Women’s Council for her contribution to transatlantic cooperation between the U.S. and the EU on environmental and climate change issues, as well as a Recognition by the Mayor of Athens of “her contribution in promoting the Hellenic spirit worldwide.”
She is also a Member of the Network of Women Ministers and Leaders for the Environment, the Hellenic Association for Environmental Law; the Parliamentary Network on the World Bank and IMF; the American Society of International Law (ASIL), the European Society of International Law (ESIL), the Academic Council on the United Nations System (ACUNS), the Biopolitics International Organization, the European Women Lawyers’ Association, the Global Diplomatic Forum, the Euro-American Women’s Council, and the Women’s of Europe Award-Greek Division.
DR. ELENI CHATZICHRISTOU
Dr. Eleni T. Chatzichristou is a Research Associate of NKUA. She received her PhD in Astronomy from the University of Leiden (Netherlands) and conducted research in astrophysics in several top institutions world-wide (1994-2004: NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, Space Telescope Science Institute, Yale University, European Southern Observatory). In 2005 she was awarded a Marie Curie International Re-integration Grant to conduct research at the National Observatory of Athens.
During the following years she gradually became involved in a variety of national and international science communication activities: co-coordinated the Press Office and Outreach and Media Center (EPMC) of Europlanet RI (affiliation: National Observatory of Athens), coordinated the the outreach national nodes network of Europlanet-RI in more than 20 countries (affiliation: National Observatory of Athens), coordination of yearly outreach best practice workshops of Europlanet 2020 RI (affiliation: Institute of Accelerating Systems and Applications), Outreach officer of the Eu-funded MAARBLE project (affiliation: National Observatory of Athens), Greek coordinator of the EU-funded Hands-on-Universe project (affiliation: National Observatory of Athens), Outreach and Communication officer of the Astroparticle Physics European Consortium (APPEC), Greek representative at the European Particle Physics Communication Network (EPPCN).
Since 2012 she is member of the SOC, chairing the Outreach Education Policy (OEP) sessions of the yearly European Planetary Science Congress (EPSC). In June 2016 she became project manager of the Academic Cluster of Science and Technology of USPC (Université Paris Sorbonne Cité) and since January 2017 she is the project manager of the Laboratory of Excellence UnivEarthS at Université Paris-Diderot (France). ANGELICA KATSIYIANNI
Angelica Katsiyianni was born in Athens in 1978 and was admitted to the Athens Bar Association in 2006. She is a Supreme Court Attorney. She graduated from the University of Aberdeen, School of Law, LL.B. with a specialization in International and European Law, and holds a Master of Laws LL.M. in Commercial and Company Law from the University of London – University College London (UCL), School of Law.
She specializes in: Banking and Finance Law, commercial contract negotiation and drafting, company incorporation and continuous legal support. She speaks English, French, Spanish and Greek.

ISABELLE VAN DAMME
Isabelle Van Damme practises international trade law, with a particular emphasis on WTO law, and European Union law.
WTO Law
Isabelle advises clients on WTO procedural and substantive law and represents governments in WTO dispute settlement proceedings.
Isabelle has represented WTO Members before WTO panels and the Appellate Body in dispute settlement proceedings involving export quotas and duties, accession protocols, export licensing, transit restrictions, administration and review of trade measures, general exceptions, minimum export pricing, discriminatory taxation and customs valuation.
Isabelle also assists clients on all aspects of the negotiation of trade and investment agreements.
Isabelle previously gained experience in the areas of WTO law and public international law as a Legal Liaison Officer at the United Nations Secretariat, Legal Affairs, Codification Division and as a Legal Intern at the WTO Appellate Body Secretariat.
EU Law
Isabelle has significant expertise in the area of EU law.
Isabelle previously worked as a référendaire in the chambers of Advocate General Sharpston at the Court of Justice of the European Union, where she assisted with the drafting of opinions on a variety of issues, including external relations, common commercial policy, free movement of capital, intellectual property, import licensing, EU citizenship, freedom of movement of workers, consumer protection, life assurance, agricultural aid, fisheries, visa and asylum, access to information, protection of the environment, product labelling, terrorism and money-laundering suppression, protection of personal data and public international law.
Isabelle advises on various aspects of data protection, EU institutional law and EU external relations.
PERISTERA PASCHOU
I work at the intersection of human population genetics, statistical analysis and genomic medicine, and my research interests lie in two main areas: first, I study the genetic basis of complex disorders in diverse human populations aiming to translate research findings into clinical applications and, second, using novel methods for large-scale data analysis, I investigate human genomic variation and population genetic relationships around the world.
Towards the first goal, a major focus of my research is the elucidation of the genetic background of neurodevelopmental phenotypes, such as Gilles de la Tourette Syndrome, autism, obsessive compulsive disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. I study genomewide datasets and I have a leading role in multiple large-scale collaborative efforts such as the EMTICS and TS-EUROTRAIN consortia. At the same time, working with neuropathologists and analyzing whole genome sequencing data, I also investigate the potential link between neurodegeneration and neurodevelopment.
On the other hand, working towards the decomposition of human genetic variation around the world, I investigate human evolution and the migration patterns of the human population across the globe and in particular population movements around the Mediterranean basin (GENOMAP.GR project). Interdisciplinarity is an important aspect of my work and I place particular emphasis on transferring algorithms and methodology from the fields of Computer Science and Applied Mathematics to population genetics and medical genetics. In an era of Big Data and the ability to mine the genome of hundreds of thousands of individuals, such approaches pave the way towards the direction of personalized medicine.

Giorgos Kremlis started his career in the European Union in 1981. He was a Legal advisor (from January 1981) in the European Commission’s Legal Service, with an interruption of three years (1990-1993) in Greece. In that period he exercised the functions of Advisor to the Greek Minister of National Economy (1990), National Co-ordinator for the European Economic Community (EEC) internal market (1990-1992), Head of the EEC Committee under the Greek Prime Minister (1993), and Secretary General for European Affairs in the Ministry of National Economy (1993). During this period he was also a Member of the Greek Competition authority.
In 1995 he joined DG Environment. From 1995 to 2004 he served as Head of the Legal Unit, responsible for all legal issues in the DG, including, inter alia, the legality of new initiatives, the implementation of EC environmental legislation and investigation of national compliance with EC Directives and Regulations; handling of complaints, infringements, EU Ombudsman requests and Petitions. From 2004 to 2005 he was Head of the “Legal affairs and Governance” Unit, responsible for in-house legal advice, Århus Convention (access to environmental information, public participation and access to justice), Environmental Liability, Environmental Criminality, the IMPEL Network that he co-chaired, the Forum of Judges and the International Network for Environmental Compliance and Enforcement (INECE), Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), and the financing of NGO’s programme. From June 2005 to May 2013 he was the Head of the Unit “Cohesion Policy and Environmental Impact Assessments”, responsible for the overall integration of the environment in the Cohesion Policy (ERDF, ESF, Cohesion Fund), the Trans European Networks for Energy and Transport, and EIB/EBRD loans.
In his current position, since June 2013, he is the Head of the “Mainstreaming and Environmental Assessments” Unit (former “Enforcement, Cohesion Policy & European Semester, Cluster 1” Unit), responsible for the enforcement of EU environmental law and of the compliance with environmental law of projects (and plans and programmes) co-financed by the EU as well as the evaluation of their
impacts. He is also responsible for environmental integration in Cohesion Policy and the Trans European Networks for Energy and Transport.
From March to August 2011, he served as Acting Director of the Directorate “Legal Affairs and Cohesion” and from June 2013 to January 2014 as Director ad interim of the Directorate “Implementation, Governance and Semester”.
In his current position, he is Chairman of the ENEA-MA (European Network of Environmental and Managing Authorities), and the EIA/SEA (Environmental Impact Assessment / Strategic Environmental Assessment) Experts Groups. He is also a Member of the Board of the Espoo Convention.
He has also served as a member of the Board of the National Centre for Environment and Sustainable Development in Greece, and as a member of the Greek Regulatory Authority for Energy (RAE). He is Founding and Honorary President of the Hellenic Environmental Law Association.
He is a lawyer of the Greek Supreme Court and in the past he has been a Research fellow at the Centre of International Economic and European Law (1979-80), in Thessaloniki. He is visiting Professor in a number of universities, in Greece and abroad, especially in post-graduate studies. He is the co-author of a four volumes Commentary, Article by Article, of the EU Treaties (in Greek). He is also the author of a very large number of various publications, in English, French and Greek, including books and articles, on EU Policy and Law, in particular institutional law, business law, private international law, environmental law, and comparative law

one of Europe’s oldest families. Diego Massimiliano received military and diplomatic training in Europe and the United States.

He also served as a consultant to the United Nations Democracy Fund, the United Nations Department of Public Information, and the

Diego Massimiliano sits on the advisory and executive boards of several companies and organisations.

Chrysa Efstratiou is a Research Assistant of European Institute of Law, Science and Technology (EILST). She holds a bachelor’s degree in Water and Soil Engineering (2012), specialized in Renewable Energy Technologies (2017). Chrysa’s published Master’s thesis deals with Wave Energy Applications in order to promote energy efficiency and provide alternative solutions to water scarcity problems in isolated island or coastal communities.
A core focus throughout her career has been the study and analysis of soft energy applications to address water related issues using applications of spatial analysis tools to study both regional effects and damage patterns concerned with water conservation status.
In recent years she has been cooperating with private companies and NGO’s, promoting new technologies in the Water sector. Chrysa’ s responsibilities include the development of environmental management programs, development of environmental policies and strategies, environmental law and climate change issues, environmental investments in pollution control, wastewater treatment and related infrastructure.

Aikaterini (known as Katerina) Giosma is a Greek Journalist and a Comms Professional from Thessaloniki with origins from Izmir (Minor Asia), France and the Black Sea, currently dwelling in Athens, who is responsible for the Social Media, Communication and Dissemination Department of the
European Institute of Law, Science & Technology.
She is a member of a startup team under the name Tech Talks Central, whose strongest dissemination tool is the interviews it conducts with movers and shakers, from inside tech events, broadcasting live to its community of listeners from all over the world and then saving all audio material as podcasts.
Prior this, Katerina was for 3 years a Media, Comms and Social Media Officer/Project Manager for the environmental NGO Hellenic Ornithological Society. In addition to her communication key responsibilities and daily tasks, she co-implemented and successfully completed 3 European Programmes (LIFE+, GRUNDVIG, LEADER+), while contributing for 5 more (LIFE, Natura 2000).
Working with teams and people from different countries, enhanced her intercultural awareness, which was also cultivated by being polygnot and corresponding via snail mail since her childhood till now with all continents on Earth! In adddition, evolving herself by taking over new responsibilities in diverse environments, emerged Katerina’s creativity, adaptability and passion for every novel challenge on the way. So, it is true that her”lifelong learning bug” knows no cure and it is fed by a genuine curiosity and a lot of MOOCs…
As a Journalist, if data could speak, she has so far proofread and edited almost 20.000 pages, made 6.000 hours of radio broadcasting, conducted more than 300 interviews and weaved 200 story-driven articles, while crafted over a 300 marketing-advertising publications.
Katerina holds a Master of Arts on European Communications and Policies, obtained in 2012 by the public University of Athens.
In her free time, she plays with words- in the form of poems- and her acoustic guitar.

Public Health Researcher
Konstantinos Kalachanis was born in Athens in 1981. He received his degree in Philosophy-Pedagogics and Psychology, from the Faculty of Philosophy and a Master’s degree in “Environment and Health, Capacity building for decision making” from the Medical School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. Also he holds a PhD in Philosophy.
Since 2012 he has been teaching the course “Bioethics” to the students of the Post Graduate Program “Environment and Health, Capacity building for decision making” and the course “Environment and Cancer” to the students of the Post Graduate Program “Neoplasmatic Diseases: Diagnosis, and Research” in the Medical School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. Also from 2012 until 2016 he was research associate of the Astrophysics-Astronomy-Mechanics Department of the Faculty of Physics of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.
His research interests include History and Philosophy of Science and Astronomy, Ancient Greek and Byzantine Philosophy, Environmental Bioethics and Cosmology. His scientific works includes more than 80 articles published in refereed scientific journals, in conference proceedings and scientific volumes. He is also editor of scientific volumes. Furthermore he is Secretary General of the International Scientific Association of Ancient Greek Philosophy.
Christophoros Kapopoulos is a Professional Civil Engineer (DUTH) and Geologist (UoP) with a M.Sc. degree in Civil Engineering Infrastructure (UoP). He is also certified in Coastal Modeling (DHI/MIKE), Shoreline Management (Danish Institute), Integrated Coastal Zone Management (UNESCO-IHE).
Mr. Kapopoulos is the Founder and Managing director of Ch. Kapopoulos & Associates Co., AQUATERRA, established in Patras, Greece since 2007. He has a professional experience of 25 years in various scientific fields of Coastal and Geotechnical Engineering, Scientific Simulations, Environmental Impact Assessments, Geophysical exploration.
In his professional career he has conducted over 300 surveys, studies, reports and applications for the Public and the Private sector in collaboration with Greek Authorities and Municipalities, Construction Consortiums, Private engineering and commercial companies, Hotels, Universities, Institutes. He is author and co-author in 12 scientific papers published in Scientific Magazines, Books and Conferences proceedings.
Thanasis Karageorgos was born in Athens in 1991. He received his degree in Economic Science with a major in International and European Economics, from Athens University of Economics and Business. After the fulfilment of his mandatory military conscription, he gained experience in the field of export management and environmentally friendly products. The strong influence of environmental standards set by the EU as well as the growing personal concerns on environmental issues, led to a shift towards the environmental sector.
He graduated from the University of East Anglia, receiving his MSc in Water Security and International Development from the Department of International Development. During his MSc studies, he received life-changing perspectives in regard to water management, through vigorous research and field trips in the UK and China. His MSc thesis tackled the unique goal of Singapore’s water independence, examining the goal’s necessity and feasibility through Mark Zeitoun’s web of global water security.
His research focus is on topics in the context of water security and the exploration of the various linkages with interdependent sectors (such as climate change, energy security). In his free time, he tries to stay mentally and physically active via literature, music, basketball, and martial arts. Furthermore, he enjoys photography and exploring different cultures.

Krassakis Pavlos has studied Geology and Geoenvironment at National & Kapodistrian University of Athens and holds a Master’s degree in Environmental Design of Infrastructure Works, specialized on integrated geospatial and space-based approaches. Main objective of his scientific work is Applied Geographical Information Systems (Applied GIS) in environmental sector, especially in soil and water remediation using 3d/2d modeling techniques. He has been involved in relative research projects such as ‘HydroEvia’, providing a thorough figure of the water potential of Evia prefecture aligned with the Water Framework Directive (WFD). In addition, he has corporated with Hellenic Institute of Geological and Mineral Research (I.G.M.E.) in various projects related to: a) hydrogeological study of 15 Natural Resources as Thermal springs b) area mapping of superficial geothermic resources by soil and groundwater data and c) monitoring soil indicators in relation to water resources. Moreover, he has been involved in studies related to soil contamination assessments and formulation of cost effective remediation strategies for habilitation and closure purposes especially in mining sector. Currently, he is collaborating with CERTH / CPERI in RFCS EU project SLOPES, in order to advance monitoring and risk analysis of slopes within open pit lignite mines across Europe.

RESEARCHER – DEVELOPING COUNTRIES
Nektarios Polychroniou is the managing Attorney of the Law Firm NJP Polychroniou & Associates.
He is a Supreme Court Attorney and Adjunct Professor at the Hellenic American University.
He has graduated from the University of Athens – School of Law and holds a Master of Laws (LL.M.) from the Georgetown University, School of Law, in Washington – USA. He is author of the study “Corporate, Tax and Labor Law” in «Business and Management Practices in Greece – A Comparative Context», which was published by Palgrave Macmillan London, and a number of legal studies about the World Trade Organization and the South African Development Community.

Rebecca Strauss has just completed her first year at Georgetown Law in Washington, DC. She will be the president of the Environmental Law Society in 2018-19. She graduated from Brown University in 2011 with a BA in International Relations and History.
Prior to beginning law school, Ms. Strauss worked as a litigation paralegal at Gilbert Employment Law, a plaintiff-side employment law firm. She has extensive experience volunteering with environmental organizations including the International Anti-Poaching Foundation in Zimbabwe doing patrol work as well as the San Francisco Department of the Environment doing community outreach. She also worked as a research assistant for the Interamerican Association for Environmental Defense (AIDA). In addition, she served in AmeriCorps for a year, volunteering with the Nature Conservancy doing ecological survey work to promote the carbon market, the American Red Cross immediately after Hurricane Sandy, and the US Fish and Wildlife Service fighting a wildland fire.
Katerina Stoli is a Researcher in European Institute of Law, Science and Technology (EILST) since 2017, where she conducts research for environmental, climate change, climate finance and space law issues, prepares drafts, proposals as well as press releases and speeches and develops environmental management policies, and strategies. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in International, European and Area Studies, specialized in Environmental Governance and Sustainable Development (Jean Monnet Programme).
A core focus throughout her career has been the study and analysis of the legislative and policy framework regarding environmental matters, the financing of sustainable development, the empowerment of the enforcement mechanisms of Environmental Law, the mitigation and adaptation of climate change and the support of innovative technologies, such as IoT and space technologies. All these aspects have been approached under a humanitarian as well as environmental perspective, highlighting the role of the environmental education in tackling the existing issues and promoting the SDGs. During this year, she gradually became involved with the interconnections between the environmental protection and the maritime sector, exploring the transition towards sustainability through green shipping practices that enhance maritime energy efficiency.
Prior to that, she volunteered for the Greek Council for Refugees (GCR), a Non – Governmental Organization within the field of asylum and human rights that provides a smooth integration of refugees in Greece. A subject relevant to the sustainable development agenda. She is additionally an active member of many civil society organizations, most notably Action Aid and has attended several seminars and conferences.
Katerina Stoli received a first degree in International, European and Area Studies from Panteion University of Social and Political Sciences of Athens, Greece and a Master’s degree in Environmental Governance and Sustainable Development, with distinction. Katerina’s Master Thesis deals with the case of migration in the context of the 2030 agenda on sustainable development and questions the social issues within the realm of sustainable development.
Marios Theodorakopoulos was born in Roupaki – Ilias in 1978. He studied Engineering of Natural Recourse and Environment from Technological Educational Institute of Crete (2005) and he has hold a Master’s degree in Environmental Science from Patra’s University (2011), while he has been continuing as a PhD of Civil Engineering of Patra’s University specialized on Wastewater treatment and energy production. Throughout his academic studies, he was awarded “Karatheodoris” scholarship (2011-2013).
Except for his strong environmental engineering studies, Marios has nearly 7 years experience at Hellenic Air Force General Staff (HAFGS), as an Environmental Engineer Officer, responsible for developing and monitoring environmental management systems, environmental policies and procedures about the management of hazardous and non – hazardous wastes and recycling materials for continuous safe working conditions. During the past 7 years, he has participated in several European Defence Agency (EDA) projects for developing energy and environmental management systems, in accordance with the international standard ISO 50001:2001 and ISO 14001:2015, serving as point of contact between EDA and HAFGS. He has been a National Alternate Representative of the Ministry of National Defence in North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and EDA since 2014.
Also, having experience in preparing various compliant plans, such as Environmental Assessments, Water and Land Pollution Prevention Plans and Spill Prevention Control Plans. More than 5 years of lab experience in operation and maintenance of wastewater treatment plants, physiochemical and microbiological parameters and collection of statistical survey data at Amaliada’s Municipal Water Supply and Sewerage Company and also at the Civil Engineering Department of Patra’s University, as a researcher.
Finally, having been developed crucial features (Managerial skills, Problem – solving and crisis-solving abilities, Technical skills, Flexibility, etc) from his professional background, which summarized his experience and qualifications. Excellent knowledges in the administrative procedures and legal framework of public administration and the environment, scientific and technological knowledges about Renewable Energy Sources, Water Resource Management and Environmental Monitoring and Assessment.

Dr. Dimitris XEVGENOS has a strong engineering background, having graduated as Mechanical Engineer from the National Technical University of Athens (2008), MSc from Electrical Engineering (2010) and Ph.D. Degree from Chemical Engineering (2016) by the same university, while he continues as a Post Doc at TU Delft. Throughout his academic studies, he was awarded 11 prestigious scholarships, out of which seven for performing at top 2% of his class (out of 150 students).
Except for his strong, inter-disciplinary engineering background, Dimitris has developed coordination and management skills. Over the past 10 years, he has participated in 10 European projects, serving as Leader for WPs related to the design of prototype equipment, as well as Scientific Coordinator of three H2020 projects. Dimitris established a start-up company (SEALEAU B.V.) for the exploitation/commercialization of his PhD results. The merit of the scientific results, as well as the contribution of this company to the Blue Growth opportunities have been recognized from the EU Commissioner for the Environment Mr. Karmenu Vella with the 1st Blue Growth award. Dimitris has participated in a business accelerator competition, where the start-up was distinguished among 15,000 companies and received a 6-month intensive training on business development and market exploitation by experts. In 2016, Dimitris submitted a proposal (ZERO BRINE), supported by 22 partners from 10 EU countries, and raised €10 million to scale-up the technology developed in his PhD. To date, Dimitris has written 5 successful EU proposals, raising more than €14 million.

Moving as a family first to Belgium, then Egypt and now Saudi Arabia, he have experienced
different societies and cultural norms.This has enhanced and piqued his interest in politics and
international relations. Studying towards his A levels (History, Politics and Computer Science)
has enabled him to drastically improve his understanding of the theory behind politics through
class research projects. Outside academics, being part of his school’s Senior Leadership Team,
Nikolas has created a successful order and payment system for the annual graduation jackets for
over 50 students and staff. This drastically improved his knowledge on people management,
ensuring the meeting of deadlines even when a plethora of people are involved.
Serving as the Secretary General of his school’s MUN he has developed his people
management skills, organising his school’s delegate team in a national conference and
increasing membership by 80%. During the summer of 2021, Nikolas was selected for an internship at
the German-Saudi Arabian Liaison Office for Economic Affairs (GESALO). Within GESALO, he
aided with the organisation of a business delegation on the Petrochemical sector. Furthermore, he
independently contracted local companies and set up meetings with German counterparts to
ensure a successful market entry into the biggest market in the Middle East and North Africa. He
believes that the skills he have amassed will allow him to aid and work on projects within the
institute.
Maria Eleni Katsiampoula, 20 years old, studies Political Science at the University
of Amsterdam in the Netherlands. Her main focal points in political science are
international relations and diplomacy, environmental affairs, and international
development studies. Except her interests in political science, Malena has
studied Physics for a year in the National Kapodistrian University of Athens and
thus is also interested in interdisciplinary issues that combine natural with social
sciences. In addition, she is passionate about writing with publications in
Migratory Birds, a magazine by young refugees, and in University’s of
Amsterdam Political Science association newspaper. Over her school years, she
has participated in numerous Models of the United Nations both as a delegate
and as the chair of the environmental committee.
George Klonis has always been interested in mathematics, algorithms and physics, while being a competitive person. Today, he is involved in Robotics, where he gets to show off all these skills.
George, started learning to code at the very young age of 9 years old, participating in National Robotics competitions, though it was always more of a hobby than a career focus. The first year of High School, was when he really got into coding and realized software engineering was the right field for him.
Since then, he has been practicing by himself, creating small projects and with his Robotics team. Together, they have achieved a lot, such as many 1st place awards in the national Robotics competition and the 5th place on the Word Robot Olympiad. Today, he is a student in Ekpedeftiki Anagennisi, studying for his last year of A-Levels.
I am familiar with a variety of programming languages, including Python, HTML, CSS, C and SwiftUI, but I am always adding new skills to my repertoire.
