Dr. Dionysia-Theodora Avgerinopoulou, Special Envoy of the Greek Prime Minister for the Ocean and Coordinator of the Our Ocean Conference 2024, participated in the Monaco Blue Initiative, the annual international conference organized under the auspices of HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco.
During the conference, Dr. Avgerinopoulou highlighted the contribution of the Our Ocean Conference 2024 to the global political dialogue on sustainable blue economy and ocean protection. She presented the key priorities Greece intended to promote through the Conference, including the strengthening of Marine Protected Areas, sustainable coastal tourism, green shipping, the fight against plastic pollution, and the green transition of the Mediterranean basin. She also called for stronger international cooperation for sustainable development and ocean protection.
The 9th Our Ocean Conference (OOC-9), hosted in Athens on 16–17 April 2024, brought together hundreds of participants from governments, international organizations, NGOs, academic and research institutions.
During her participation in Monaco, Dr. Avgerinopoulou met with HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco and representatives of the Monaco Blue Initiative. She also held discussions with Ms. Mahlet Mesfin, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Oceans, Fisheries and Polar Affairs at the U.S. Department of State, as well as with members of the Greek community who organized an event on invasive species spreading across the Mediterranean due to climate change.
In addition, Dr. Avgerinopoulou met with representatives of international organizations, civil society, NGOs, the private sector, the scientific community, and media representatives, seeking synergies for marine environmental protection and the development of a truly sustainable blue economy. She stressed that the Our Ocean Conference aims to generate concrete commitments for new projects and policies.
The Monaco Blue Initiative is a unique platform for dialogue bringing together key actors involved in ocean protection and governance. It was launched in 2010 by HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco and is co-organized by the Oceanographic Institute of Monaco.
