Dr. Dionysia-Theodora Avgerinopoulou, President of the Committee for the Protection of the Environment and Water Resources of the Hellenic Parliament and Greek Prime Minister’s Envoy for the Ocean, attended the online webinar “Can reducing methane emissions build a healthier, more sustainable future?”, jointly organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), UN ESCAP and UNECE.

The dialogue focused on the significant impact of methane emissions on climate change, public health, air quality, agriculture and the environment, as methane is a powerful greenhouse gas largely produced by human activities.

During the discussion, participants examined successful national approaches and the economic, environmental and social benefits of reducing methane emissions, as well as the role of parliaments in promoting targeted legislation, sustainable practices and cooperation among parliaments, governments, civil society and experts.

The webinar also served as a pre-event to the 2026 regional forums on sustainable development of ESCAP and ECE, highlighting the importance of collaboration to advance the implementation of the Global Methane Pledge and the SDGs.
