Dr. Avgerinopoulou Appointed Vice President of the Executive Committee of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU)

Dr. Dionysia-Theodora Avgerinopoulou, Member of Parliament for Ilia, Chair of the Parliamentary Committee on Environmental Protection, and member of the Hellenic Parliament’s delegation to the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), was unanimously appointed Vice President of the Executive Committee of the Inter-Parliamentary Union on behalf of the geopolitical Group 12+, during the Steering Committee meeting of the IPU Group 12+ held in Monte Carlo, Monaco.

This appointment represents one of the highest and most influential parliamentary positions at the international level and marks the first time that the Hellenic Parliament has assumed this role within the Organization.

The Inter-Parliamentary Union is one of the oldest international organizations, bringing together parliamentarians from 180 countries and political parties worldwide. The IPU works closely with the United Nations and national parliaments to ensure that the voices of elected representatives are reflected in negotiations on major humanitarian, developmental, geopolitical, and global issues, including climate change and migration.

The position of Vice President is held by six representatives, one from each geopolitical group represented within the IPU, including the Group 12+, the African Group, the Asia-Pacific Group, the Arab Group, the Eurasia Group, and the Latin American and Caribbean Group. The role carries a one-year term with the possibility of renewal.

The Group 12+ includes parliamentarians from most European countries, as well as Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, representing this geopolitical parliamentary bloc within the IPU.

Dr. Avgerinopoulou already possesses significant experience within the Organization, having served for a second term as member of the Hellenic Parliament delegation to the IPU and as member of the Executive Committee of the Inter-Parliamentary Union. In 2014, she was also elected Chair of the IPU Standing Committee on United Nations Affairs and participated ex officio in the Executive Committee.

The Hellenic Parliament has consistently supported the IPU for decades and has undertaken initiatives to further strengthen and enhance the Organization’s role internationally.

Dr. Avgerinopoulou expressed her sincere gratitude to the Directorate for International Affairs of the Hellenic Parliament for its continuous support of the IPU’s work and its contribution to the success of her candidacy.
